A Life Lesson for Grandparents about Bickering

Do you see arguing and bickering around you? You can rise above it and bring hope and peace to your family.

We have hummingbird wars in our backyard.

Those sweet little flutter birds are really dive-bombing territory-defending warriors.

If you have a hummingbird feeder in your backyard, then you know what I’m saying. They don’t like to share their treasure. Even though there is plenty of room at the feeder and sugar water for all.

They’re endlessly entertaining as they battle across our backyard, but they reveal a spiritual truth.

A Life Lesson for Grandparents About Bickering

People argue like hummingbirds all around us.

In our families… we turn to getting what we need, defending our territory, and bickering with others.

In the world around us… the pandemic, the injustice, the economy, and politics draw us in to territory-defending and dive-bombing.

But we are the elders, beloved grandparents. We walk with Jesus. And like the hummingbirds…

We have a bickering-busting treasure to share.

Your treasure is the good news of Jesus. What he has done in your life. The hope and comfort that he gives you when times are hard.

You have a treasure of wisdom, understanding, perspective, and knowledge. All the years you’ve accumulated have taught you a thing or two.

You have a treasure of resources. It may not feel like it, but compared to most of the world, you are wealthy.

We can rise above the hummingbird-like wars around us and give others what they need.

  • Your grandchildren may need attention or affirmation.
  • Your kids may need peace and help.
  • Your neighbors or co-workers may need hope and comfort.

We can ease the hummingbird-like bickering and arguing in our families and neighborhoods and workplaces by sharing our faith, our wisdom, and our resources. Jesus promises to keep us filled up as we spend our days filling others up.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  Luke 6:38

If only the hummingbirds would realize it.

To recap, this life lesson for grandparents about bickering:

  1. People argue like hummingbirds all around us.
  2. We have a bickering-busting treasure to share.
  3. We can rise above the hummingbird-like wars around us and give others what they need.
